Lacquers are organic pigments known since ancient times as they are derived from natural dyes; they are obtained by precipitating dyes of vegetable or animal origin, with insoluble mineral substances. Their use dates back to the ancient Romans, who in painting used the purple of Tire, obtained from a mollusk. The lacquered colors are presented in powder of varying specific weight depending on the type. They do not have excellent resistance to light, but very lively, bright and transparent color tones; precisely the transparency, given by the inert substances that compose them, makes them suitable also for glazing.
Being chemically stable and in many cases free of heavy metals, they are not harmful to the human body either by ingestion or by contact with the skin.
When used in water it is advisable to first dissolve the color forming a fluid paste and add the chosen binder. The powder lacquers are recommended for internal use.
